In true Nevada fashion, spring keeps teasing us. Although we had a record-breaking water year last year, the weather was mild enough that we were able to keep up with the mosquito population. We haven’t had the wet winter we did last year; however, the lake is already at capacity. Management is monitoring the situation and collaborating with TCID so we can anticipate and prepare for the County’s mosquito abatement needs this summer.
We have new foggers, misters, and a full crew ready to tackle whatever the mosquitoes throw at us. We have established aerial contracts with local pilots and upgraded some of our gear. Management is confident that, along with the public’s assistance, our technicians are equipped to handle the coming season.
Our technicians have started working, treating larvae, and are checking known and possible mosquito sources. They have also been spraying pre-emergent herbicides on many roadsides for noxious weed control. Please keep in mind that we ONLY treat noxious weeds on County property. Private property owners are responsible for the weeds on their property. If you are interested in participating in our free weed class, call the Lahontan Conservation District at 775-423-5124 ext. 101.
If you plan on having an event in the upcoming season, please let us know at least 2 weeks in advance if you would like your property treated for mosquitoes. This gives our technicians the flexibility to work around the weather so that you have one less thing to worry about.
Leg Count- This is an example of one way we assess how prominent the adult mosquitoes are in a given area. Depending on how many mosquitoes land on the technician’s legs within thirty seconds, this will help determine the concentration of the swarm, the species present, and how to proceed with treating the area. When we receive a service request one of our first responses is with this field assessment.
